About Us: Jenni's Words

How learning Irish dancing can boost self-esteem

In 1993, Jenni was a senior in high school and a member of the Ring of Kerry Irish Dancers.  Along with her mother, Jenni attended classes and participated in our performances.  Here is an excerpt from her college application:

"My first experience with Irish dancing was when I was fourteen and I began attending my friend’s ceili dancing class.  I was nervous at first, but I quickly lost all apprehension when I was welcomed so warmly by people who are now some of my closest friends.  I quickly learned many of the ceili dances, practicing frequently and attending as many ceilis as I could….I have met so many wonderful people through Irish dancing, people who have become like a second family to me through their sense of community and their acceptance of me….When I began dancing, I was unsure of myself and I didn’t have much understanding of people….I have become confident in myself and my abilities, not only in Irish dancing but in all areas…."

More than 20 years later, Jenni’s words still ring true.
